Remedies to a Smelly Garage

Remedies to a Smelly Garage

A smelly garage is usually a sign of trapped moisture, chemical buildup, or decaying organic material. Because garages often lack proper ventilation, odors linger and can seep into the rest of the home. Eliminating these smells requires addressing the source rather than masking it.

Start by removing clutter and absorbent items such as cardboard, old rugs, and unused fabrics. These materials trap moisture and odors. Inspect the space for leaks, standing water, or damp walls. Natural odor absorbers like baking soda, charcoal, or bowls of white vinegar help neutralize smells instead of covering them.

Improving airflow is essential. Opening doors regularly or using a fan reduces stagnant air. Cleaning floors and walls removes residue from oils, trash, and chemicals. A clean, dry garage improves indoor air quality and prevents long-term structural and health issues.
